That’s exactly what happened to a woman that came into our store a few weeks ago. She had been purchasing her Rottweiler’s senior dog food at one of the big box pet food stores but more and more often lately they were out of the size bags she needed. That was bad enough but eventually she caught on that the employees there didn’t really care if she found what she needed or not and they certainly weren’t going to make any effort to ensure what she needed would be there the next time she came in.

We can’t say that it completely surprised us to hear this but we’re sad that someone had to go through it. We don’t think anyone should be treated with indifference when they’re shopping or at any other time so we make sure our staff really shines when it comes to customer service. When it comes to raising livestock like chickens, goats, sheep, cows, pigs and rabbits we stock many products that you may not be able to easily find elsewhere. If there’s something in particular that you’re looking for and you don’t see it on our site or on the shelves in our store, please bring it to our attention and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.

We carry two sizes of Wazine 17 – 8 oz. and 16 oz – for use in the drinking water of chickens, turkeys and swine. It removes large roundworms (Ascaridia spp.) from turkeys, chickens and large roundworms (Ascaris suum) and nodular worms (Oesophagostomum spp.) from swine. Each 100 mi contains 17 grams of Piperazine Base (present as sulfate). Be sure to consult your veterinarian for assistance in the diagnosis, treatment and control of parasitism.

Our inventory includes a whole range of udder treatments for cows that include Dr. Naylor Udder Balm, Durvet Drench, Cut Heal Udder Delight, Bag Balm, AgriLabs Chap-Guard, Pro Bios Bovine One Oral Gel, Cut Heal Udder, and Elanco Tylan. In addition we carry Durvet Duramycin in two sizes. This is a solution containing broad spectrum antibiotic oxytetracycline. It is effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria for beef cattle, dairy cattle, calves (including veal) calves, and swine.

For treatment of bovine respiratory complex (shipping fever, pneumonia), footrot, diphtheria and metritis in beef cattle in beef and non-lactating dairy cattle we stock Elanco Tylan. It’s also used for treatment of respiratory illness, pneumonia, PPLO, arthritis and erysipelas infection in swine.

Intervet Safe Guard Dewormer is popular for cattle due to no known side effects. Fenbendazole (the active ingredient used) controls over 99% of all the major worms in cattle, including lungworms and intestinal and stomach worms. We also stock products for preventing worms in rabbits, goats and sheep.

Fall officially begins today, September 23, so we thought we could kick off the season of college football, falling leaves and apple picking with some fun fall facts.

1. September 23 is the autumnal (fall) equinox. There are two equinoxes each year and the other are in March at the start of spring.

2. On this date the day and night are each about the same length. The term equinox comes from the Latin for “equal night”.

3. One of the visible signs of fall is the changing color of the leaves. This happens because photosynthesis stops during this period so leaves do not stay green.

4. Favorite fall fruit and vegetables include apples, spinach, squash, bell peppers and, of course, pumpkin.

5. The largest apple supplier in the southeast is western NC. Take a weekend road trip for a fun family event and pick your own apples.

6. The custom of bobbing for apples originates from Roman times.

7. Due to South Carolina’s warm fall weather, the peak colors on our trees are normally not until late October. However, some trees, like weeping cherry trees are already losing their leaves.

8. Evergreen trees remain green through the winter because they have waxy leaves which do not freeze.

9. During this period birds prepare for winter migration. One of the longest migrations is the 11,000 mile journey by the Arctic Tern. However, the bar headed goose is also impressive reaching heights of 28,000 feet to skim over the Himalayas.

10. While we call this season ‘fall’, the British call it ‘autumn’. Both words date from around the same period in the 16th century. Before these terms came into use, this period was called ‘harvest’.

When it comes to Halloween we think nobody does it better than the City of Conway, South Carolina. Every year thousands of people come to Conway to celebrate the spookiest holiday in the scariest way possible! So come on out and get your “Boo!” on.

The Conway Ghost Walk: Spirits of the Lowcountry takes place from 7-8:30 p.m. on October 23, 24 and 25 at the Conway Visitor Center, 903 Third Avenue in Conway. Tours begin every evening at 7 p.m. and leave the box office every 15 minutes until 8:30 p.m. The tour, with professional storytellers, is just over 60 minutes long and the tour route is approximately 1 mile. Tickets are $15 for adults and $7 for children 12 and under. Sponsored by Conway Downtown Alive.

A Halloween Carnival takes place from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, October 25 at the Conway Recreation Center, 1515 Mill Pond Road, Conway. There will be fun for the entire family. A costume contest starts at 7:15 p.m. Carnival games will be 25 cents to $1 per game or $5 for an all-you-can-play pass. Watch “Hotel Transylvania” on the big screen at the ball field beginning at 8:45 p.m. There will be a tasty S’mores Station, Hot Dogs, Pizza and soft drinks available. Always quite popular, Terror Under the Bridge is being held at the X Sports Complex in Myrtle Beach this year from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. You’ll be able to get your scream on nightly from October 24 through November 1.

The 42nd Annual Chick Day will be held at Conway Farm & Garden on Friday, April 3, 2015. Come to this special event and bring the kids — there will be food, beverages and a petting zoo. We will also have bunnies in the store the week of March 23 through Easter.

Chick Day is your opportunity to select your chicks and save money on discounted supplies. We have all the supplies you’ll need for raising your flock and keeping them healthy. If this is your first time raising chicks following are some tips to keep in mind.

Things You Should Know About Raising Chicks

Raising your own chickens can be a rewarding experience. Whether you’re doing it for the constant stream of eggs or for increasing the size of your livestock, here are some things you should know about raising those chicks.

The “brooder”, which will be your chicks’ home initially, should be kept in a safe place preferably indoors. This will ensure protection from predators and drafts.

When the chicks are between 8 to 12 weeks of age you can introduce them to their outdoor coop home and begin getting them acclimated to it.

Use feeders and waterers made just for baby chicks. These are designed to keep the food and water at a level the chicks can reach, but without allowing the chicks to spill or get droppings in their food or water.

Be sure to use the proper feed for your chicks. Feeding them the same food as your hens may cause digestive or kidney issues due to the high levels of calcium in the feed.

Nobody likes discovering that their four legged family member has brought fleas and/or ticks into the home but through no fault of their own this happens a lot. These parasites are not only creepy to see jumping around but they can potentially cause serious disease in animals and humans alike. If you think your canine has fleas you’ll want to attend our Free Flea Dip for Dogs event.

This Saturday, July 11 the Free Flea Dip for Dogs event will be ongoing from 9 a.m. until 12 noon at Conway Feed and Garden Center. If you’re not familiar with this popular event we encourage you to bring your best canine friend and check it out. Did we mention it’s free? There’s simply no faster way to rid your dogs of all size fleas and their eggs than with one of these flea dips.

In the continually hot temperatures we have in the south fleas multiply with complete abandon if you don’t take precautions and use preventatives. But the first step is to rid your pets of any present fleas they may have and a flea dip is the ideal way to do just that. Afterwards, it’s critical to use a preventative collar or liquid application on your pet.
